Google accused by developer of retaliation for cooperating with House antitrust investigation

“We have been developing for the Google Play Store for more than six years, but we woke up this morning to find ourselves kicked out with no notice,” Blix co-founder Ben Volach said in an interview Friday.

Google spokesman Dan Jackson said he would look into the issue but did not immediately comment on Blix’s removal from the app store.

On Wednesday, the antitrust subcommittee of the House Judiciary committee questioned the CEOs of Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google about new evidence the committee has gathered in an ongoing investigation into allegedly anticompetitive behavior by the four companies...

Trump says he plans to bar TikTok from operating in the U.S.

Earlier Friday, Trump was considering signing an order forcing China’s ByteDance to sell off the U.S. portion of TikTok over national security concerns, according to people familiar with the talks, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss them publicly. One of the individuals confirmed Microsoft was in the lead to acquire the popular platform’s U.S. service.

While the order was expected to be signed Friday, people had warned that it could fall through since the president was also considering other approaches, including designating TikTok under an executive order that allows the president to exclude national security threats from U.S. networks.

Late Friday, the president told reporters he was not in favor of a deal to let a U.S...

Rupert Murdoch’s son quits News Corp. board over ‘disagreements’ about coverage

“My resignation is due to disagreements over certain editorial content published by the Company’s news outlets and certain other strategic decisions,” Murdoch wrote in the letter, which was filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday.

His resignation is the strongest sign yet that Murdoch, 47, has broken ideologically from his family’s media holdings, which include the cable news channel that he once had oversight over.

While his father, who remains the company’s executive chairman, is influential in Republican politics, Murdoch and his wife, Kathryn, have long been major donors to left-leaning causes and political candidates...

The pandemic underscores how public parks shape public health

But for tens of millions of Americans, that’s easier said than done; according to the Trust for Public Land (TPL), a nonprofit group that works to protect parks and other outdoor public spaces, roughly 100 million Americans don’t have a public park within a 10-minute walk of their home.

“For far too many communities, quality green space where families can recreate and practice social distancing is simply not available,” said Diane Regas, the president and chief executive of TPL.

TPL maintains a national database of park infrastructure in 14,000 cities and towns. On average, about 55 percent of Americans have easy access to a local park, or one that is within a 10-minute walk from home. In the top-ranking cities, such as Minneapolis and Washington, D.C...

Pandemic kills off century-old paper plant, and a region reels

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. — Darrell Fox checked his email at the paper mill on a summer morning in June and immediately texted his wife at home: “Call me if you’re up.”

He didn’t want to tell her by text that the mill was closing.

They had met at the plant long ago, married and worked there together. Now they were losing their jobs together.

The massive paper mill has churned relentlessly since it began feeding off the energy of the Wisconsin River more than a century ago, forming the cornerstone of a city’s economy and producing glossy paper coveted by publishers during the heyday of U.S. magazines.

But the novel coronavirus pandemic has sped up a long-term trend — the waning need for the paper used in magazines and printed advertising — and Verso Corp...

Uncertainty, anxiety and sleepless nights for the unemployed as Congress lets $600 benefit lapse

To many economists, the extra $600-a-week in unemployment benefits that Congress created in March, which helped stabilize income for tens of millions of unemployed workers, is one of the main reasons the financial crisis is not even worse.

Banks have not seen a deluge of defaults on consumer and corporate loans, personal debt is down, and some studies have shown that poverty rates eased compared to pre-pandemic levels, as a significant percentage of lower-wage workers ended up collecting more on unemployment than they did at work.

But this benefits cliff is here, as most of the unemployed received their final infusion of the extra $600 from the federal government last week.

Workers will still receive payments from their home states, but the loss of the extra $600 will slash paymen...
